Ozzie Smith is a former MLB shortshtop who played for the San Diego Padres then the St. Louis Cardinals from 1978-1996. He was born in Mobile, Alabama, but moved to Los Angeles when he was six. After high school Ozzie Smith attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and was able to walk on to the baseball team. After the teams starting shortstop went down with an injury Smith was able to secure the starting job with both his defensive and offensive abilities. Before being drafted by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round of the 1977 MLB Draft, he set school records in total at bats (754) and stolen bases (110). 

Smith played one year with the Padre's minor league team the Walla Walla Padres of the Northwest League, then was invited to the 1978 spring training. His work in spring training would earn him a spot on the major league team and had his debut on Opening Day April 7, 1978. In 1980 Ozzie Smith began his 13 year reign of the Golden Glove award. Then in 1981 he had his first of 15 MLB All-Star appearances. 

In 1982 Ozzie Smith agreed to a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals. After another Golden Glove and All-Star year, Smith made his first postseason appearance brushing off the Atlanta Braves in a three game sweep before moving on to the World Series against the Milwaukee Brewers. Down 3-1 in the sixth inning of game 7, Smith started a rally that would score three runs and take the lead. He would finish his first postseason appearance with a World Series win. Ozzie Smith would go on to retire in 1996 and later inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame as well as the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame.
